Then my daughter-in-law had an upsetting experience. Her beautiful roses that the deer had not bothered for three years were stripped of roses and leaves one day. Previously they had eaten day lilies, hostas, garden vegetables (except rhubarb and herbs), and even the ramps I transplanted.

Here are just a few of the deer that seem to be always around where I’m moving. Looks like there will be a whole new set of problems!

One more beautiful sunset to enjoy before the sun starts moving the other direction to eventually set behind many trees.

I gave away four blueberry bushes which all lived in their new homes. The six bushes that are left have abundant blueberries.

Update on my previous post:

I heard the turkey hen yesterday among the rhododendron, but never could find her. The food I put out is eaten, but I don’t really know if the turkey and poults are enjoying it or not.

Another surprise was the beautiful blooms that shot up from the Lamb’s Ears.

The spikes of blossoms lasted a long time, and were appreciated by the bees and me. I cut them off before they went to seed. Lamb’s Ears are invasive enough without adding seeds to their production.

There are so many commercials on TV that tout their brand as the best. I wanted to see for myself. The hardward store here has a bag of potting soil called Baccto that they say is just like MiracleGrow, but cheaper. So I planted two basil seedlings in small pots and two in larger pots at the same time. I tried to keep watering and sunlight the same for both.

In both examples the MiracleGrow is on the right, the Baccto on the left. The first set shows an edge to the MircleGrow, but the second is definitive. MiracleGrow may be worth the extra cost.

It is so handy having herbs on the deck.

Both the purple basil and parsley are the three plants I left in each container after transplanting the rest of the seedlings.

Nasturtiums may not be classified as herbs, but I do use them in salads. They finally had three blooms, but are so spindly. They were planted in a hanging pot with hopes of cascading flowers draping to the deck. Time will tell.

First I planted too many vegetables too close in the garden. Then the rains came and made the garden look like a jungle. In the first square several butternut squash plants are surrounding the two artichoke plants. Maybe they will grow globes in desperation.

This row of Smeraldos below climbs on three levels of fence, but the vines also started climbing the tepee. They are dense with leaves and many beans, but I have to hunt when I pick.

The Smeraldos below are rather sparse, but have many beans that are easier to pick. (The blueberry frames and netting in the background are now gone, as are the fresh blueberries.) I’ve already enjoyed a meal of the tasty beans, and have attempted freezing some for this winter.

I’m hoping the dill in front of the beans will reseed and have seed heads in time for dill pickles.

Actually dill is everywhere. As I pull it I put it around the squash to keep away vine borers.

This square is not so crowded yet. It has okra, lettuce, beets and a variety of onions from seeds.

The Supervisor had to rest after the long walk down to the garden.

There are three Topsy Turvies on my deck this year. Two will soon be moved to the back because they need to be higher. I had planted a Health Kick, Brandy Boy and Tangerine in them originally. Even though I thought I moved them out of the way, two were zapped with the pressure washer. The Health Kick survived, barely.

The Tangerine didn’t make it. I had grown that one from seed, so replaced it with a Pink German.

Mary Alice gave me these two flat leaf parsley plants. I planted another pot with the curly leaf. So far there are a few small plants appearing. Lots of little purple basil sprouts have appeared, so many that I transplanted some to the garden. Two nasturtiums came up that I hope will make a pretty hanging basket.

The last two plants, for now, are the Cucino cucumbers that will climb the corner of the gazebo, and hot peppers. The larger one, a Tabasco, was purchased as a plant. The smaller one is a Serrano I grew from seed. I’m going to hand pollinate them so they won’t cross-pollinate. I’d like to see and taste the difference.

It’s appeared! The dog-tooth violet leaves are up. Now all the wildflowers transplanted from Columbia, Missouri have survived. So far there are no blooms, but it has multiplied. Hopefully the blooms will start next year.

Below is a picture of one from Missouri that inspired the transplant.
