How lucky can you get! I’ve never had to buy a hosta. So many people have been so generous with theirs. After having them a few years it’s easy to share with others. As lovely as these are, this fall they need to be divided and replanted. Some have already been shared along the edges, but it’s hard to tell because they fill back in so quickly.
White, blue, or purple flower stalks will appear later in the summer. They contain hundreds of seeds.
The flowers are just opening above, and farther along below.
The lavender blooms lighten as they open.
Since these were a gift I don’t know the name of each variety. These wavy one are some of my favorites, as well as the people with whom I share them.
Although most hostas are shade-loving, the variegated varieties do better with more sun.
This type of hosta grows very tall and stately.
Hostas make lovely ground cover and divide easily any time of year.
Two more preferred plants are the wavy, yellow edged one below,
and this one with white edges. This one grows more slowly than any of my others.
And this aggressive plain green hosta cascades down the bank and invades the rhododendrons.
